Narok Development Cluster
Narok Development Cluster is made up of Narok, Nairragie Enkare, Ololulung'a, Mulot, Lemek, Oloikirikirai, Naroosura and Entasekera parishes. It is headquartered in Narok parish where a mission house and community outreach was established in 1960. Presently, population is estimated at 365,750 residents, mainly Maasai.
The area is predominantly semi-arid in lower Narok but higher area to the north is the Mau Forest, the largest water tower in the country whose existence is under serious threat form squatters. Â In the lower area of the cluster is the world famous Maasai Game Reserve which is one of the most spectacular wildlife ecosystems and a declared 7th wonder in the world.
Key development challenges in the area include; environmental degradation, lack of basic social services, droughts, famine and human-wildlife conflict. So far, the programme's interventions have been in improvement of education, health and nutrition, livestock production, environmental management, water supply and sanitation, drought mitigation and peace-building. Â Human-Wildlife conflicts for water and pastures are prominent in the areas bordering the Game Reserve. Â Likewise, conflicts for the same are regular between the people across ethic divide pitting the Maasai and the Kipsigis spillralling also because of land and livestock rustling.
The recent needs assessment revealed that the development cluster’s priorities lie in environmental and natural resource management in terms of and, water, pasture and forests, HIV/AIDS, youth development and livelihoods, small and medium business development, livestock improvement and governance issues.
